My DM is usually very opposed to homebrew, and I can understand why, seeing as a lot of homebrews are ridiculous, but from a flavor and mechanics standpoint, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I've thought of combining classes for our game, but everything I've asked has either been ignored or shut down. I'm not trying to outshine other players or do everything, I just want to feel like Yojimbo. Starting when you choose this this tradition at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with with two additional one-handed or versatile weapons of your choice, and can use these weapons as monk weapons with your Martial Arts class feature.
In addition, when you successfully hit a creature with a monk weapon but not an unarmed strikeyou can spend 1 ki point to impose one of the following effects:. At 6th level, you seize the Initiative from the enemy on a failed strike. When an enemy's attack misses, you can spend 1 ki point as a reaction to make an attack with a monk weapon.
If you took the Dodge action this turn, you may instead use your reaction to make an attack with a monk weapon under these circumstances at no cost. Beginning at 11th level, you can't be unwillingly recognized unless a creature uses its action to inspect your appearance in detail.
The creature must succeed on an Intelligence Investigation check against your ki save DC. You can spend a ki point to increase the difficulty of this check by 5 as a reaction to this check.
In addition, you can't be the subject of divination spells and can't be perceived by magical sensors unless the caster has a piece of your body or a highly personal possession, such as a piece of well-worn jewelry or a childhood treasure. These items no longer modify your saving throw against these effects, but are instead necessary to cast the spell at all. Starting at 17th level, when you successfully hit with a monk weapon during an Attack action, you may spend 3 ki points to deal an additional 5d10 damage.
If this damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, you may make an extra attack this turn as part of your Attack action. This homebrew has a lot of problems that aren't really things you'd expect to see in an official class, and several of them are a lot stronger than what you could realistically expect to get. Save vs. These kinds of effects tend to be the next attack, or the next round, not two rounds, and especially not two rounds without getting a save to end it early.
It mirrors the Poisoned condition to an extend, but weirder. Hunter's mark for 5 rounds without concentration is a bad idea.
Not only is it needlessly stepping on the Ranger class's turf, but it is another arbitrary number of rounds effect. Waiting for the Initiative kind of steps on the Battle Master fighter's toes.
This class essentially has the Riposte maneuver, and if you Dodge, it doesn't even cost you any ki. It's not as big a deal as the later features, but it's yet another "I do what you do, but better" feature in this class.
In addition, the ki cost if you aren't dodging is a tad weird. For a bonus action and a ki point, you could be dodging and attack for free, so unless you really needed that bonus action, that's going to be the superior bang for your buck.

Put 7 levels in Monk. Monk is for the Patient Defense ability allowing you to spend a Ki point to Dodge as a bonus action. At 3rd you get Deflect Missiles and at 7th you get Evasion, both very good for defense. At most 2 levels, you would take this for proficiency in heavy armor, Second Wind, and take the Defense fighting style.
Taking levels in Fighter is not necessary for this build, it's mostly for high AC, but with the right stats that can be achieved with Unarmored Defense, as well, you cannot Rage while in heavy armor, so you probably want to weigh your options on whether or not you want to put levels in Fighter.

To some, the game is all about role-playing and exploring. To others, the game is about raiding dungeons and fighting monsters. As this is a build guide, this article serves to benefit the latter style player. This build will ensure that any combat oriented player will have tons of fun.
That being said, there are certainly alternate builds that can still achieve combat effectiveness and be lots of fun. The monk is a quite unique class. It can be used as a support class, thanks to sub-classes like Monk of Tranquility. More often than not, the monk class will be used to deal damage and to stun single targets.
What the monk lacks in tanking abilities or outrageous damage output, the class makes up for in mobility. If you want unrelenting damage output, then perhaps consider checking out the fighter build guide up above. For those that enjoy tanking, the barbarian build guide up above can be quite a bit of fun.

However if you want a unique style of damage dealing and incredible mobility, then you have come to the right place. There are many ways to build a monk. With this setup, you will be capable of attacking enemies from a distance and from melee. I always enjoy the combat versatility of being able to choose if I want to front line or just volley damage from the backline of my group, as this is a great way to really manage your aggro during battle. The key to this build is combat versatility and mobility.
Being able to deal damage from range is incredibly advantageous, as you will be able to avoid more damage than otherwise could have been avoided by fighting melee on the front lines. That being said, a monk can still benefit from unarmed attacks and flurry of blows whenever they wish to apply their skills up close in melee. Consequently, this build will allow you the freedom to stay at ranged to pick off enemies with your longbow.
Or, you can dive into the action and pummel opponents with unarmed strikes. It is also important to note that the kensei sub-class allows a monk to choose a series of other new weapons to act as monk weapons for the character. Warning: Concerning your ability scores, the graph above is using the standard 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 ability allocation that players can use if they do not wish to roll their stats.

Today we are going in the dojo with the monk! As before I want to take up some space and talk about the class as a whole. It offers a variety of ways to address martial arts and characters that use them a defining path in their existence. Themonk by far has the most options in combat with their Unarmored Defense and ability to deal deadly bludgeoning damage with only their bare hands and feet.
Looking at the progression of the monk at 11th level they switch to a d8 for their Martial Arts damage and that is when they start to taper off as a combatant. This is when multiclassing will come into effect if you are not looking to the whole spiritual aspect of the monk. My first build I want to cover in this article is by far the most diverse, tough and very cliche.
Why druid? One, the druid relies on Wisdom as its main ability score and so do monks and two, the druid Circle of the Moon is perfect for this build. Let me elaborate.
The monk caps their Martial Arts damage at 1d10 which can be used with any unarmed attack. At 11th level you reach 1d8, which is not far off as far as rolling damage goes. With that said onto the druid Circle of the Moon Circle Forms feature to change shape into any beast form with a challenge rating as high as your druid level divided by 3, rounded down.
At 6th level this means beasts up to CR 2. These beasts include ape, giant eagle, poisonous snake, giant constrictor snake, tiger and even the sabertooth tiger. The Way of the Open Hand also provides the monk a way to heal themselves with Wholeness of Body and the Circle of the Moon allows the druid to spend spell slots to heal for 1d8 per spell slot level while in Wild Shape form. Aside from this the druid can cast beneficial spells to aid the party in combat. The base theme behind this character in my mind would be a wu jen practitioner of animal style kung fu, at least thematically speaking.
For this build you would go 12 levels of Way of the Open Hand monk and 8 levels of Circle of the Moon druid. This allows you to not miss every fourth level feat or ability score increase. This build uses the monk Way of Shadow and the paladin Oath of Vengeance together to create the ultimate combat mobility character who can control the battle field as well as heal their allies in a fight.
Paladin is a perfect fit to multiclass with the monk as it also uses Wisdom as a primary ability score. The feats Polearm Master and Sentinel go great with this build allowing the monk to be in the right place at the right time with their Shadow Step feature from the Way of Shadow. Being able to teleport to any ally in a dark dungeon to heal them with Lay On Hands or a cure wounds spell can quickly turn the tide of battle.Tradingview charting library tutorial
The ability to heal themselves with spells and Lay on Hands can prove quite challenging to any opponent also. I find this build to be quite unique and fun to play and I hope you do as well. The ranger was a proper fit for the monk multiclass in that it also utilizes Wisdom and Dexterity as primary ability scores.
The ranger also grants the monk a Fighting Style. Both Dueling or Two-Weapon Fighting can be quite beneficial.
All in all this build can be pretty devastating. Tune in next time when we will be taking a look at multiclass builds in Church of War with the paladin! I supplemented 5 levels of rogue assassinmaking my monk 9 and my paladin 6. I think this is an excellent build for a Charlatan or tyrant slayer character. Either works really depends on what you want.
